Translucency does not mean invisibility, but rather semi-transparency. Marmar is a white translucent stone that is not alabaster nor is it marble; it’s a stone native to caves known as onyx-marble. Marmar is found in Luxor, deep in the desert’s mountains. While its extraction and transportation are strenuous tasks, our entrepreneur, who appears in the film, tries to be present for both. A native Luxorian himself, Alaa knows the desert and Marmar by heart, and through his institution Habu Arts, his wish is that so will everyone else. As white isn’t a colour but all colours, so is Marmar. And what is white light but all light? From the golden dunes of the Luxor desert to the pale white cast of the stone itself, Marmar’s fusion of light, colours and textures tells a tale of beauty in the contrasts.
